For the first time, Taiwanese bananas have been chosen by the Olympic Committee as one of the fruits that will be served to athletes during the Games.
COA (Council of Agriculture) has announced that the country will ship 5,000 kg of bananas to the Tokyo Olympics. The fruits will be used in meals prepared for athletes during the Games from July 23 to August 8.
The Japanese Olympic Committee had approved bananas and pineapples from Taiwan. But as the pineapple harvest period has just ended, only the bananas have been selected and will be eaten in the Olympic village.
The 5,000 kgs of bananas that will be served to athletes around the world come from Pingtung County, in the far south of Taiwan.
According to COA, in recent years, Taiwan's banana exports to Japan have tripled from 1,000 tonnes to 3,000 tonnes per year.
