Key markets have reduced demand, which has resulted in a decline in the value of melon / watermelon exports (Photo: radioamerica.hn).
Unsatisfactory start to the year for exports of melons and watermelons from Honduras. 16.5% decline in value, mainly due to the decrease in orders from key markets.
According to a report on foreign trade of BCH (Banco Central de Honduras), in the first 4 months of the year exports of melons and watermelons amounted to $86.1 million, or 16.5% less than the $103.1 million realized over the same period in 2019.
This decline can be explained by the decrease in orders (12.2% in volume), particularly from the United States and the Netherlands, which together account for 87% of the country's exports, as well as by a contraction of about 4.9% of the prices.
Melons / watermelons are the country's second agricultural export product after bananas. Industry professionals believe that the market should recover quickly, with global consumption increasing in summer.
