Mango prices crash at Bangkok markets amid oversupply

Farmers and wholesalers are overwhelmed, facing losses as domestic demand collapses.
Mango prices in Bangkok (Thailand) have dropped to just 20 baht ($0,61) per kilogram, the lowest in years, causing major concern among vendors and farmers. Market sellers say the oversupply is overwhelming, with many forced to sell overripe fruit at steep discounts or throw it away. Wholesalers are also struggling, reporting far more fruit than usual arriving from orchards.
The Department of Internal Trade confirmed a 25% drop in average farmgate prices this season — the biggest decline in a decade. Processed fruit exporters are postponing shipments over tariff concerns, prompting mango pulp factories to halt operations. As a result, domestic demand for raw fruit has collapsed, worsening the market glut.
On May 7, the government announced emergency actions: buying directly from farmers, speeding up logistics, and supporting bulk purchases for schools and social programs. Measures include toll-free access for fruit trucks, special cargo lanes, and subsidies for refrigerated transport.
Despite a public push from Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to “eat more Thai fruit,” vendors say they’ve seen no real improvement. With stalls nearly untouched and unsold fruit piling up, farmers and sellers alike say what they need most now is buyers — not promises.
