Zespri reports good start to season
New Zealand
Wednesday 25 July 2007
The Zespri New Zealand season has begun well, with strong, early kiwifruit sales.
New Zealand kiwifruit exporters Zespri have announced an early start to this year's season, which has in turn led to strong sales in Europe.
Zespri saw their earliest start so far, with the first vessel arriving in Europe on the 7 May, and this coupled with poor weather across the continent has pushed sales ahead of last years relative figures.
This comes despite major competition in 2007 from a higher volume of Chilean kiwifruit, which is being sold at substantially lower prices than in previous years.
As with all New Zealand exporters, revenue and grower's returns are suffering as a result of the high New Zealand dollar, with Zespri estimating a reduction in returns of between 0.44EUR and 0.94EUR per tray.
