To ensure its own food resources to no longer depend on imports, which currently account for over 90% of products consumed in Qatar.
The government has set out its objectives in the National Vision 2030 by putting food security at the center of its concerns. Qatar has invested heavily in farms in the desert using to greenhouses where a computerized control system adjusts to every plant needs (moisture, nutrients).
On a farm west of Doha, a greenhouse of 55,
000m2 is used for flowers (roses, gladioli, chrysanthemums). These advanced systems used for flowers will be next applied to vegetables, starting with tomatoes, peppers and salads. The country plans to cover 60% of its needs.
To combat the problem of water scarcity, the country will build more desalination plants that operate on solar energy. Qatari farms consume 700,000 m3 of water per day.
