Record weight (88.5 kg) for the biggest watermelon of Spain

The record of last year was beaten of more than 3 kg.

During the festival of San Bartolomé in Villanueva de la Serena, the 52th edition of the contest of Watermelon and Melon crowned the largest fruits. A local farmer, Antonio González Casillas, won the competition with a watermelon of 88.5 kg.

Antonio González Casillas also won the 2nd and 3rd prizes with watermelons of 81.6 kilograms and 80.7 kilograms. Already a winner of last year with an 85.2 kilograms watermelon, Antonio González Casillas therefore improves the record by more than 3 kg for the largest watermelon of Spain.

In about ten years, the contest has seen a succession of records and watermelons weight increase: 53.2 kg (2001) 79.2 kg (2003) and 85 kg (2012) and 88.5 kg in 2013.
