Landcare to study NZ kiwifruit emissions
New Zealand
Tuesday 04 December 2007
A study in greenhouse gas emissions aims to give New Zealand an edge in overseas markets.
In New Zealand, Landcare Research is heading up a project aiming at measuring and eventually reducing carbon emissions associated with the country's kiwifruit industry.
It is hoped that the 6-month collaboration, also involving HortResearch, AgriLINK and Massey University, will allow kiwifruit producers to gain strength in competitive overseas markets by using "internationally recognised, transparent and validated greenhouse gas footprinting methodologies".
Zespri chief executive Tony Nowell said: "Consumer interest is now intensifying in relation to the environmental and social impacts of the products they use and consume, so an opportunity exists to continue to secure our premium pricing through a clear linkage to the sustainability attributes of our products."
