The chernozem contains a very high percentage of humus as well as important minerals. Because it is very fertile and requires no fertilizer, it is considered one of the best soils in the world. In Ukraine, "black earth" covers about 2/3 of the country.
Interesting comparison that demonstrates the breadth of this valuable Ukrainian resource, said Taras Kutovy, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
The minister wrote on his Facebook page that Ukraine has an area of black earth (chernozems) that exceeds the area of Great Britain. By specifying that Ukraine holds 278,000 square kilometers of black earth soils while the area of Great Britain is about 244,000 square kilometers.
Ukraine has 30% of the world's black lands and retains a key role in ensuring global food security. This was stated by Raimund Jehle, Deputy Regional Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for Europe and Central Asia.
