To promote the progress of Peru's agroexport sector, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) made it possible to carry out electronic exchanges of phytosanitary certificates between Peru and the United States through the advanced e-Phyto solution of the National Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).
Thanks to the efforts of SENASA Peru and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), it is anticipated that the agro-export sector will achieve an estimated annual savings of more than US$2.7 million by eliminating the need to physically send certificates by courier services.
According to official statistics, last year 183,591 paper certificates were generated, of which 54,275 correspond to shipments to the U.S. From now on, the issuance of paper phytosanitary certificates for products such as blueberries, grapes, mangoes, avocados, asparagus, and others destined for the U.S. will be obsolete.
Currently, Peru is already exchanging electronic phytosanitary certificates with countries such as Colombia (2019), Mexico (2019), Chile (2020), and recently, in December of this year, with Argentina.
Next year, electronic certification is expected to be completed with the European Union (Netherlands), the main access point for Peruvian products in that market, which represents more than 40% of total exports.
