New apples and pears varieties from Belgian developers on test
Belgian fruit tree growers are known worldwide for supplying top quality. With their commitment and constant innovation, these family companies cultivate trees to meet European and Asian markets demands.
The desired qualities in modern commercial apple breeding are a colourful skin, absence of russeting, ease of shipping, lengthy storage ability, high yields, disease resistance, typical "Red Delicious" apple shape, long stem (to allow pesticides to penetrate the top of the fruit). Modern apples are sweeter than older cultivars, as popular tastes in apples have varied over time. Most Europeans favour sweet, subacid apples. Extremely sweet apples with barely any acid flavour are popular in Asia.

They have proved to be masters of the art: each year a new variety originates that is even tastier and more fertile than the last one. «Last year consortium Melinda signed a contract with ABCz about the production of Gradisca apples. The previous one was about apple strain Kizuri,” says Achiel Rijckaert of the ABCz Group.
« Starting with 200 hectares per strain, it’s approximately 10,000 tonnes of fruit. We plan to increase volumes after testing the market.”
