Tomate chonto price drops in Colombian markets
VU
Colombians benefit from stable grocery prices and steady food supply in late May.
As May concludes, Colombians are observing noticeable shifts in grocery prices. A significant change is the reduction in the price of tomate chonto, which decreased by 500 pesos (approximately $0.12 USD) in week 21, now costing 4,500 pesos per kilogram (around $1.08 USD), according to data from Corabastos, one of Colombia’s largest wholesale food distribution centres.
No major price increases were reported for the standard basket of goods, however, certain vegetables and fruits not typically tracked, such as celery, spinach, green beans, and tomate larga vida, experienced moderate price hikes ranging from 300 to 1,000 pesos (about $0.07 to $0.24 USD).
Conversely, several items became more affordable, including broccoli, cilantro, strawberries, passion fruit, and bell peppers, with prices dropping by 200 to 1,000 pesos (approximately $0.05 to $0.24 USD). These decreases are attributed to a robust supply flow, as Corabastos received over 4,600 tonnes of food and more than 700 delivery vehicles.
