India supports agro-processing in Suriname with new equipment to boost passion fruit packaging and local production capacity.
Suriname has received its first shipment of fruit processing equipment from India as part of a $1 million grant for small and medium enterprises. The machinery will be used to set up a passion fruit packaging unit aimed at increasing the value of local agricultural products.
The project is supported by India’s NABARD Consultancy Services (NABCONS), which confirmed its feasibility in a study completed in July 2024. The packaging unit is currently under development.
In addition to this grant, India has also provided $10 million in food security assistance to Suriname. The cooperation follows a series of development projects and credit lines between the two countries.
