California to expand olive oil capacity
United States
Monday 31 October 2005
The amount of land in California devoted to olive trees for oil production is to increase by about 30 percent this year.
Famers will plant around 2,000 acres this year, and by 2009 it is estimated that California's olive oil production will be about the same as France's.
Meanwhile, California growers are struggling to find seasonal workers for this year's harvest, and as much as 25 percent of the crop may go unpicked.
