The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in its most recent report on the Departmental Economic Panorama of Peru, has revealed that national avocado production in September of this year reached 33,601 tons. However, this data reflects a significant contraction of -35% compared to the 51,711 tons obtained in the same month of the previous year, mainly attributed to a decrease in cultivated areas.
The detailed analysis of the INEI identified that, in September 2022, avocado production experienced a notable reduction, especially in La Libertad (-68.9%) and Lima (-18.7%), despite the fact that both departments contributed significantly with 61.2 % of the national total. In addition, decreases in production levels were observed in Arequipa (-80.3%), Ayacucho (-77.2%), Áncash (-56.1%), Lambayeque (-42.5%), Apurímac (-40.9%), Amazonas (-34.3%). %), San Martín (-9.7%), Junín (-7%), and Cajamarca (-6.7%).
The significant increase in production volume in the departments of Moquegua (+467.4%) and Ica (+161.2%) stands out, consolidating themselves as the third and fourth largest producers of this crop. These results are particularly relevant, given that avocado is an important export destined for both the international market and agribusiness.
Additionally, other regions that experienced growth in avocado production include Loreto (+1.7%), Cusco (+6.7%), Piura (+9.3%), Huánuco (+17.2%), Huancavelica (+22.7%) and Pasco (+82.5%).
