The country expands its mango exports to Australia, Malaysia, and South Africa
India's mango export industry has embraced radiation processing to meet international phytosanitary standards, opening markets like the USA. After the KRUSHAK irradiation facility began operations in 2007, exports steadily grew, with forecasts of 2,500 tonnes in 2023 and 3,000 tonnes in 2024. Key mango-growing states include Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, with Maharashtra and Gujarat leading in exports.
The country operates 28 food irradiation plants, including the KRUSHAK facility, which treats mangoes, onions, spices, and grains to meet safety standards and extend shelf life. Mango exports to the US, which totaled 1,150 tonnes in 2017, have continued to grow.
India has also expanded its mango exports to Australia, Malaysia, and South Africa, with the first successful sea shipment to the US marking a significant achievement. Sea freight offers cost benefits and supports larger export volumes, boosting prospects for the industry.
