Brazil sees 24% rise in banana shipments to Mercosur
VU
The banana sector continues to benefit from favorable market conditions and competitive pricing.
Brazil increased its banana exports in April 2025, with total shipments to Mercosur reaching 7.6 thousand tons — 24% more than in March. Exports to the European Union also rose sharply, hitting 1.8 thousand tons, up 51% month-on-month. Both figures were significantly higher than in April 2024, according to local media outlets.
Exporters credit this growth to a larger supply of the nanica banana variety this year, leading to more competitive international prices. Santa Catarina remains the top exporting region to Mercosur, while Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará lead shipments to the EU.
Reduced banana supply from regional competitors like Bolivia and Paraguay supported Brazil’s growth in the Mercosur market. In Europe, demand increased due to weather-related issues affecting production in Central America, Colombia, and Peru.
Even if production recovers in those regions, Brazil is expected to keep up strong shipments to Mercosur through late May. This is due to Brazil’s high domestic supply and lower local prices, which make exports more attractive.
