Onion, with off-season fruits and vegetables, is one of the main growing sectors in Senegal
Onion production for 2016 is estimated at 367 000 tonnes, a slight decrease from last year's production (367 500 tonnes) but well above the threshold (350 000 tonnes) by the authorities.
Estimated at 367,000 tons the onion production of 2016 results in a turnover estimated at 35 billion FCFA (about 7 million euros) according to figures from the Ministry of Commerce.
In the country, onion production increased from 40 000 tonnes in 2004 to 367 000 tonnes in 2016. This is the second consecutive year that the threshold of 350 000 tonnes has been exceeded. The threshold is set by the government's PRACAS (Program for Accelerating the Rate of Senegalese Agriculture).
The onion occupies the first rank of vegetable crops with areas exceeding 5 000 hectares.
