Spain would recover from the damage caused by the frosts of the previous season and would increase by 52% compared to last year, with an estimated 99,000 T, but it would remain 16% below its productive potential, which is between 130,000 and 150,000 T. , projects the Business Association of Fruit of Catalonia, AFRUCAT.
In Spain, apricot production in 2023 will recover from the damage caused by last season's frost and will increase by 52% compared to the previous year, according to the Catalan Fruit Business Association, AFRUCAT.
Greece and northern Italy have also been affected by frost, as well as a lack of cold hours during winter. Consequently, the forecast for the apricot harvest in Europe has decreased by 7% compared to the previous season, with a forecast total of 500,000 T. This is also 7% below the average of recent years.
The impact of the drought, which is affecting all of Europe and especially Spain and the south of France, has not been taken into account in these forecasts, stresses AFRUCAT.
The export of Spanish apricots in 2022 fell significantly in volume and value compared to the previous year, due to severe frosts in the main producing autonomous communities such as Aragon and Catalonia. In 2021 the export stood at 97,066 T, but it fell to 59,514 T in 2022 (-39%). The value also went from 164 million euros in 2021 to 112 million euros in 2022 (-32%), according to data from the Customs and Excise Department of the Tax Agency.
