The current spring-like weather conditions in Granada (Spain) are speeding up the asparagus harvest. Some growers are planning to start harvesting next week, a month earlier than usual, due to the recent high temperatures. However, this brings with it risks, as frosts and storms are threatening production.
The Granada Small Farmers' Union (UPA) is concerned about the possibility of frosts that could affect flowering and reduce the harvest. The threat of frost extends until the end of March, and the drought also poses challenges for irrigated and rainfed crops. The lack of back-up irrigation during the season aggravates the situation.
According to local producers, even one night with temperatures below freezing can significantly impact asparagus production and affect the quality of the product. Concern in the sector is widespread. In addition, the amount of water received so far is considered insufficient for rainfed crops, let alone irrigation, which translates into an expected decrease in yields. Under these conditions, a hectare planted with asparagus, which normally produces between 5,000 and 6,000 kilos, could be reduced to 2,000 or even less.
