Sugar cane and seaweed based packaging could help reduce plastic use.
Edible packaging has been developed as a method to remove plastic packaging.
Developed in France by a scientist from Harvard, "Wikicells" packaging could reduce our waste volumes.
By imitating fruit, with a skin impermeable to water keeping the interior dry, the packaging is edible and 100% biodegradable. The
shell is composed of a fibrous residue of sugar cane, the skin is made from natural particles of chocolate, fruit, nuts, seeds, and seaweed.
The Wikicells can be pierced with a straw for drinks. Several food companies have expressed interest for the concept that could be used for ice cream, soups, cheeses, soft drinks and coffee.
