Production decreased in Belgium and France, remained stable in Germany and increased in the Netherlands. But consumption is declining in all markets except Italy.
Chicory professionals gathered for the 'Witlof Biënnale' held this year in Etten-Leur (The Netherlands). The Biennial takes place every 2 years in one of the most important producing countries. Among the topics covered, the succession in production, the decline in consumption recorded in all markets except Italy, production by 2030.
The speakers explained the situation in their respective countries. The sector seems in contraction, the number of producers is decreasing. In the Netherlands, production recovered from 48 000 tonnes in 2014 to 51 000 tonnes in 2018. In France production continues to decline from 168 000 tonnes in 2014 to 154 350 tonnes in 2018. In Belgium, is estimated at 32 000 tonnes, down by 11% from 2016. In Germany, production is expected to remain stable at 14 000 tonnes. Organic production is slowly gaining ground and is expected to total 25% of crops in 2030.
The sector is worried about the decline in consumption. In 2017 according to a study 62% of households bought endives in the Netherlands, 77% in France and only 12% in Germany. To combat this decline, product promotion should be further developed.
"We need to get more attention from young people, to emphasize the versatility of endive and its many preparations - whether it is baked, wok or more - we will also have to look for more relationships with the catering industry and the food service companies. catering, where the use of fresh vegetables is increasing. "said Willem Rodenburg of GroentenFruit Huis, one of the organizers of the event.
