The study on the market potential of Malaysian vegetable and fruit exports to Singapore, conducted by the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) in 2006 which involved 273 Malaysian producers revealed that the exports of Malaysian agriculture produce to Singapore dipped, due to stiff competition from China, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Among the factors that come into play study mentions: the lower prices offered by these food-producing countries, inferior quality of Malaysian agriculture produce and the strict labelling and packaging standards imposed by Singapore.
The question is how to overcome this problem and achieve the government's objective of making the agriculture sector Malaysia's "third growth engine".
The study remarks that the current global trend is to meet consumer demand that focuses on the quality of food products, with the priority on safe consumption that has become crucial in the world's agro-food trade.
