Turnover declining for strawberries, increasing for raspberries

Freshuelva established its 1st assessment of the campaigns of strawberries and raspberries.

According to Freshuelva, the Association of Producers and Exporters of the Huelva region, 2013-14 strawberry production totaled 278,900 tons. Turnover reached 281.5 million euros, a decrease of -10.7% compared to the previous year.

This decrease results from the decrease of almost -20% of the price of strawberries compared to last year, while total production was similar. The 2 main destinations of strawberries from Huelva region remain Germany with 36% and France with 19%.

For raspberries, the production was 11 480 tons or +8% compared to the previous season. Sales also recorded an increase of +8.6% totaling  76.1million euro.

This year, there has been a significant increase (up to +30%) of exports in the early season. But from the month of May, because of the early start of local production in the 2 main consumer countries (Germany, UK), the demand and prices fell.
