The sharp reduction in acreage would be the cause of this decline in tomato production which is affected, according to analyses, by the national strategy which wants to give priority to cereal production.
A Tunisian media reported that tomato production in the Gafsa region reached 53,000 tons this year, compared to 75,000 tons in 2021, according to remarks made by Abdessattar Ghobtane, the regional director of agricultural development (CRDA) of Gafsa. That is a variation of -29% in volume.
The main explanation for this decline in production is the reduction in areas which have gone from 1,200 hectares in recent years to 875 hectares in 2021 then to 600 hectares in 2022. This reduction seems to be the consequence of the national strategy which wants to give priority to grain production.
