In 2020, exports of Peruvian superfood camu camu increased and reached a record, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
The value of the total exported totaled 4.7 million dollars, which is 71 % more than it was exported in 2019 (2.7 million dollars).
The main destinations for shipments of this fruit were the United States (47 %), the European Union (17 %), Japan (8 %), Australia (7 %) and Canada (7 %).
Camu camu is a tropical fruit with incalculable properties for human health, it is high in vitamin C, which is 60 times higher than orange and 100 times higher than lemon.
It is considered a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial.
This fruit is available in Peru from February to June, and between October and November. It can be harvested from the fourth year of cultivation, and then yield annual crops. This fruit lives in floodplains and on the banks of the rivers of Amazonia. Today, it is cultivated in the Amazon, Ucayali and Loreto regions.
What complicates the development of this fruit in large markets is the reduced supply of the producers. With a quality seed and good pruning, the hectare of camu camu can provide 5 tons from the sixth year of life of the crop.
