WAPA revises forecast for Southern Hemisphere apples and pears

WAPA estimates that Southern Hemisphere apple production in 2023 is expected to reach 4,974,990 tonnes and pear production 1,319,601 tonnes (Photo: foodmag.com.au).
Following the intense weather events that affected several countries in the southern hemisphere, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) revised the harvest forecasts for the 2023 season downwards.
According to the updated forecasts, WAPA estimates that the production of apples in the southern hemisphere in 2023 should reach 4,974,990 tons (+2.38%) and production of pears 1,319,601 tons (-1.25%).
Regarding apple exports, the volume is expected to decrease to 1,556,668 tons (-3% compared to 2022). Chile is expected to export 604,000 tonnes, South Africa 509,158 tonnes (-10%), New Zealand 286,823 tonnes (-15%), Argentina 84,000 tonnes, Brazil 70,000 tonnes and Australia 2,687 tonnes (-1%).
With regard to pear exports, the volume should be stable at around 670,054 tonnes, with however a variation of +12% for the volume exported by Argentina (1st producer with 592,000 tonnes) and a variation of -13 % for the volume exported by South Africa (2nd producer with 477,419 tons).
WAPA forecasts are based on data from: ASOEX (Chile), CAFI (Argentina), ABPM (Brazil), Hortgro (South Africa), APAL (Australia) and New Zealand Apples and Pears.
WAPA had presented, during Fruit Logistica in Berlin, forecasts which estimated apple harvests at 5,130,168 tonnes (+6% compared to 2022) and pear harvests at 1,348,650 tonnes (+1%).
