The state of Jalisco (Mexico) will export avocados to the United States, reported the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), Víctor Manuel Villalobos.
According to records, Jalisco already supplies avocados to 30 countries, to which the United States will now be added.
As informed by Villalobos, today, Mexico provides almost 30% of the avocado consumed in the world, and that there is a possibility of increasing production capacity and opening more markets, for which he urged producers to take care of quality, health and safety of their avocados.
According to the former president of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Avocados from Jalisco (Apeajal), José Seferino Cortez, since 2000 the area planted with avocados in Jalisco has increased from 1.000 to 27.000
hectares, 12.000 of which could start exporting to the United States.
In the last 25 years, Mexican avocado production tripled, going from 79.000 tons to 2.4 million in 2021, and currently, 87% of the cultivated area of this fruit in the country's territory is officially recognized as a free zone of the avocado pests.
