Climate phenomena have impacted production, although better results are expected by the end of the year.
During the first 41 weeks of this year, Peru exported 12.4 million boxes of fresh asparagus (each box weighing 5 kilograms), representing a 12.8% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 14.2 million boxes were shipped.
Leylha Rebaza García, Executive Director of the Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Horticulture (IPEH), reported that revenues generated by these exports totaled $313.7 million, down 13.5% from the $362.8 million obtained in the same period of 2023.
Rebaza explained that the impact of weather phenomena, such as Cyclone Yaku and El Niño, which occurred in 2023, affected asparagus production, with effects that extended into the first months of this year. However, conditions are expected to improve in the last months of 2024, which could result in a year-end closure with more positive figures compared to the previous period.
Currently, according to data from the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa), Peru has approximately 14,000 hectares dedicated to asparagus cultivation, thanks to the implemented certification processes.
The main production areas in the country are La Libertad, Ica, Lambayeque, Áncash, and Lima, with the first three responsible for 89% of the total area dedicated to this crop nationwide.
