In Bangladesh, according to government data, the potato harvest has reached a record volume, but retail prices have risen.
According to local media reports, this year's potato harvest has reached 10.4 million tonnes (10.1 million tonnes in 2022).
"This year's production is a record in the history of Bangladesh. There is currently no shortage of potatoes in the country," said Tajul Islam Patwary, Director of Field Services at the Ministry of Agriculture.
But for consumers, potato prices are up 57% on last year. There are various reasons for this anomaly, but the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association (BCSA) disagrees with the government's figures, estimating production at only 8 million tonnes, and pointing out that around 20% of BCSA members' cold storage capacity remained unused.
