New progress for the port of Antwerp, which consolidates its position on the reefer market

Despite the still tangible operational challenges, all freight flows are growing for the port of Antwerp, which recorded an increase of + 4.8% in volumes handled, an increase of + 2.8% in container traffic, and a + 3.6% increase in the number of refrigerated containers.

 

For the period January to September 2021, the port of Antwerp recorded a freight volume of 179.1 million tonnes, an increase of 4.8% compared to 2020 and a volume almost identical to that of 2019. On the period and compared to 2020, all freight flows are growing: containers are up 2.8% with 9,100,620 TEU (Twenty equivalent unit / TEU twenty-foot equivalent), the number of refrigerated containers has increased by 3, 6%.

 

In 2020, the port of Antwerp recorded an increase of + 10.5% compared to the previous year with a total volume of 1 million TEU of refrigerated containers, largely exceeding the growth rate observed on a global scale ( 3 to 4%). This trend will clearly continue in 2021 and the Port of Antwerp will thus consolidate its role as a major player in the reefer segment.

During this period of the first 9 months of the year, 10,608 seagoing vessels called in Antwerp, which represents an increase of + 3.6% compared to the same period in 2020.
