Analysing the period from 2013 to 2022, fruit and vegetable production in Spain has experienced notable fluctuations. While in 2013 it reached 22.9 million tonnes, 9 years later, in 2022, it remained practically stable at 23 million tonnes. This overall balance hides significant variations in different types of products.
On the one hand, according to data from the Yearbook of Statistics and Annual Areas and Productions 2022, vegetables have registered an increase, reaching 14.2 million tonnes in 2022, which represents a growth of 7.5% compared to 2013.
The increase is also reflected in categories such as tropical fruits and table grapes, which shot up 23% and 26%, respectively. However, this positive picture is offset by the decline in citrus and sweet fruit production, which have fallen by 8% and 23% respectively in the same period.
The cultivated area of fruit and vegetables has remained relatively stable at around 904,959 hectares in 2022.
On the other hand, potato production has experienced a reduction in both volume and cultivated area. In 2022, production stood at 1.9 million tonnes, which represents a decrease of 14% compared to the 2.2 million tonnes recorded in 2013.
The area under potato cultivation has also decreased by 11%.
