Delegates attending the recent IKO (International Kiwi Organization Convention).
The International Kiwi Organization (IKO) Convention held in Turin (Italy) gave an overview of the sector. Harvesting forecasts and favorable market, many elements raise optimism.
In the southern hemisphere the kiwi season is coming to an end, with Chile and New Zealand in a few weeks. As far as the Northern Hemisphere is concerned, IKO anticipates 2019 balanced, non-excessive and good quality production. Stable volumes in Greece and France and probable contraction of around 10% of the crop in Italy.
Participants reiterated their determination to defend the quality and value of the product. For example, avoid the risk of an early harvest that could have a negative impact on the season from the beginning. Not only for operators in the chain but also for distributors, who could see their profitability compromised in the medium and long term because of a misjudgment of consumers on the overall quality proposed.
It is recommended to wait for the right degree of maturity of the fruits, according to the parameters defined in the different countries of production, to offer a product of good quality, to the impeccable taste, thus favoring consumption.
