Tomatoes are the most consumed vegetable in Europe and the Netherlands play an important role as a producer and exporter. Tomato cultivated areas reach 1,872 hectares.
According to a recent study by the professional association GroentenFruit Huis, tomatoes are grown in glasshouses in the Netherlands on 1,872 hectares. In 2020, national production totaled 910 million kilograms and Dutch companies sold 1.1 billion kilograms of tomatoes. The difference coming from imports that were re-exported.
The study also learns that the most important markets for tomatoes sold by Dutch companies were Germany (38% of the total volume), the United Kingdom (15%), the domestic market of the Netherlands (9 %), Poland (6%) and Sweden (5%).
The Netherlands is a major player in the production, import and export of fruit and vegetables, with a total turnover in commercial value of around 18 billion euros. GroentenFruit Huis members represent around 80% of this turnover.
