A new banana to replace the Cavendish
FJ
In phase of experimentation, a new banana could replace the Cavendish banana.
This new variety, Fhlorban 925, is in the phase of experimentation. It resists better from banana tree diseases than the Cavendish and requires very little pesticides. In experimentation since 2008 at some planters of Guadeloupe and Martinique, the new banana has just undergone taste tests. Smell, texture, it is much appreciated than the Cavendish banana. Its size is smaller, Fhlorban 925 , has a mini-banana appearance. Tests in cold room took place also in wholesale market of Rungis, in order to follow its evolution.
Currently, the production reaches 900 kg per week at 6 sites (2 plots in Martinique and 4 in Guadeloupe). Agricultural monitoring, data collection, harvesting, packaging, testing. If everything proves successful, the marketing of Fhlorban 925 could begin in 2015, replacing the Cavendish variety.
