2016-17 citrus production in Florida will be one of the least important in decades.
Citrus production in Florida is likely to be the lowest level this decade that it has never been in decades, with a volume that is about 70% lower than the volume harvested 20 years ago.
According to the latest estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture, production for the 2016-17 season is estimated at 70 million cartons (90-pound).
This is nearly 11 million cartons less than last season and well below the 104.7 million cartons of the 2013-14 season and the 244 million cartons of the 1997-98 season. This collapse of production is explained by the ravages of citrus greening, a bacterial disease that has spread.
USDA, the US Department of Agriculture has announced $ 13.6 million in federal funds to mobilize researchers and scientists to find a cure for the disease. An effective remedy is vital for the future of the citrus sector in Florida.
