Trade support and established Asian retail networks are helping exporters build a wider presence.
Vietnam’s first early-season fresh lychee shipments of 2026 reached Houston, Texas, in early June and were quickly distributed through Asian retail channels.
The two airfreight consignments totalled around two tonnes. Air transport was used to protect the fruit’s freshness, colour and flavour during transit.
Demand emerged before arrival
A large share of the lychees had already been ordered before the shipments landed in the United States.
The fruit was sold through supermarkets and markets in Houston and distributed to buyers in other states. Initial demand was strongest among Asian consumers familiar with Vietnamese fresh produce.
Trade requirements
Vietnamese lychees entering the US must meet strict phytosanitary, food safety and import requirements.
Exporters also need to maintain consistent quality, suitable packaging and reliable cold-chain handling. These factors are particularly important for lychees because of their short shelf life and sensitivity during transport.
Wider market potential
The early response suggests room for Vietnamese lychees to expand in the US, especially through specialist and Asian retail networks.
Further growth will depend on larger and more regular shipments, stable supply, competitive logistics and compliance with US market standards.
