In Colombia, the search for international markets had a positive effect on the offer, which was pushed to adopt good practices and obtain recognized certifications. Colombia closed one of its best years as a supplier to the global Hass avocado market.
According to data from ProColombia, in 1 year, Colombian farms with international certifications that support good environmental and social practices, such as the Rainforest Alliance, have increased by 315%.
NaturaCert, the organization that provides certification and verification services for national and international standards for agricultural products, said Colombia is showing good growth. For the Rainforest Alliance certification, the country in 2018 had 241 hectares certified and in 2019, the surface reached nearly 1,000 hectares. For GlobalG.A.P. 73 farms with 952 hectares certified were registered in 2019.
Colombia closed one of its best years as a supplier of Hass avocados to the world market. Sandra Restrepo, Executive Director of NaturaCert, said that the issue of sustainability certifications for the avocado sector still has strong potential to grow in the coming years.
