Export season of Chilean citrus fruit starts with the first supplies destined to the U.S
VU
The first exports of Chilean clementines started in week 15, destined to the U.S, reports the ASOEX Citrus Committee. By week 17, there were 573 tons shipped, while in the same week of the previous season Chile shipped 1.503 tons. Among the varieties exported are Clemenules, Orogrande and Oronules.
The estimated export volume for this campaign is at 55.000 tons, which is 7 % higher than the previous season.
According to Juan Enrique Ortúzar, president of the Citrus Committee, the first clementines and lemons have already departed and the oranges will go next.
The crops have developed well due to the dry climate, without significant rains. Although the first shipments to date are smaller than the previous season, it is still too early to establish any change in the projections for the period.
The main destination market for Chilean citrus is the United States, which receives about 85 % of total supplies, followed by the Far East and Europe, with a 9% and 3% share, respectively. With lower stakes are the Middle East, Canada, and Latin America.
