More exports of fruit & vegetables, less imports of meat and dairy
According to data from the Ministry of Rural Development, the agricultural balance of Greece has been re-equilabrated to - 0.5 billion € (US $ 0.56 billion) in 2016 from a low -2.4 billion euros (US $ 2.7 billion) in 2009.
This recovery is due in part to the reduction in imports (meat, dairy products) due to the economic crisis but above all to the increase in agricultural exports. In European markets, the demand for higher-quality and therefore more expensive products has led to an increase in the value of Greek exports.
Exports of Fruit & Vegetables contributed significantly to these good results. In 2009, the Fruits & Vegetables balance was positive at 645 million euros (US $ 720 Million), in 2016 by more than 1.2 billion euros (US $ 1.34 Billion)
Citrus Exports reached € 173.4 million, (US $ 193 Million)
vegetables exports: € 405.3 million (US $ 452 Million)
and fruit exports: € 489.3 million (US $ 545 Million)
