The vegetable greenhouse industry in Mexico is growing rapidly; from 50 hectares in 1991, to 350 in 1997, to 1000 in 2001. It is estimated that by the end of 2006 there were about 3500 hectares in operation. Rapid growth will continue as open field producers face new challenges and demand from North America for greenhouse grown produce increases. Although still with severe problems in different areas, know how, knowledge and the economics of the industry are allowing for better built and better managed projects, resulting in higher quality products.
