India increases its exports of garlic of 1257 %
India exceeds China: its exports of garlic increased by 1257 % in volume with regard to the previous year.
According to the data of Spice Board for the first 11 months 2009-10, the exports of garlic increased by 1257 % in volume and by 724 % in value.
A low harvest in China in 2009 allowed India to conquer nearby markets as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Bangladesh.
China is the 1st world producer of garlic with more than 60-65 % of the total production.
China maintains the market, but the last Chinese harvest knew many difficulties, and numerous Asian countries turned to India for their supply.
India is the second producer of garlic to the world with a production estimated this year at 850.000 tons.
