International Congress on Hazelnut
Italy
Thursday 26 June 2008
Over 200 hazelnut international experts from 25 Countries worldwide - among which main producing areas such as Turkey, Italy, United States and Spain - have gathered in Viterbo (central Italy) from Monday 23 of June until the 27th for the VII International Congress on Hazelnut, taking place at Tuscia University.
The meeting was organized by Cefas’ Study and Research Centre on Hazelnut and Oak Chestnut and the International Society for Horticultural Science ISHS.
The congress is articulated in six sessions: Germoplast and Genetic Improvement; Biology and Physiology; Orchard Management; Pest and Diseases; Post Harvest, Quality and Industry; Marketing, Economics and Policies. In addition, delegates have the possibility to make technical visits to the companies based in Monti Cimini - few kilometers south of Viterbo, the core of one of the principal hazelnut production areas of the world - and demonstrations in the field of mechanized harvesting.
In an area of 33,000 ha there are over 9,000 farms that produce hazelnuts “Tonda Gentile Romana” covering approximately 18,000 ha and giving an average year production of 40,000 tons (corresponding to more than 5% of the world production). The high productive specialization has contributed to the creation of a very dynamic sector, where several hazelnut farmer associations as well as firms specialized in assembling specific harvesting machines or in processing and marketing are present.
