Initiated first by China and then by Italy, containment to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus extends to other countries.
After France and Spain, several American states have just decreed the cessation of all non-essential activities. In the United States, several major cities are stationary and around 100 million people are confined. In Italy, measures are being reinforced to encourage Italians to stay at home.
In all, nearly 50 countries or regions have taken steps to limit movement or establish quarantines. Last weekend the number of people confined around the world was estimated at just over 900 million people.
According to estimates by ILO (International Labor Organization) the economic crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic could lead to an increase in unemployment of nearly 25 million people. Only a coordinated response at the international level will be able to reduce this figure significantly, warned the ILO.
