Tiền Giang Province is strengthening collaboration in pineapple farming and trade to ensure stable prices and higher farmer incomes. With 15,400 hectares under cultivation, the region produces 300,000 tons annually, making it the largest pineapple-growing area in the Mekong Delta, according to local media.
To support growers, agricultural cooperatives have secured agreements with traders, offering purchase prices approximately $0.02 per kilogram above market rates. These partnerships help stabilize sales and create a more predictable market for farmers.
Efforts to improve production include the adoption of Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP), with 134 hectares already certified. The district is also expanding into pineapple-based products to increase market value and boost domestic and export sales.
Specialized pineapple-growing zones have been established in key communes, where the crop thrives despite challenging soil conditions. Farmers highlight pineapple’s ease of cultivation and stable pricing, with many expanding their farms over the years due to its reliability.
Infrastructure improvements such as embankments and electric pumping stations now support irrigation and protect farmland. Farmers trained in advanced techniques have improved yields, with some achieving 25 tons per hectare and earning up to $19,600 annually while creating jobs for local workers.
In early 2024, farmers harvested nearly 4,000 tons, selling at approximately $0.28 per fruit, generating $5,600 to $6,400 per hectare.
