Thailand wants to become a major actor in organic farming
FJ
By 2020 the country is to become the hub of organic farming for the ASEAN region (Association of Asian Nations South-East) and Asia.
To its trade minister, Thailand has great potential. Organic farming represents 1% of the Thai Agricultre now, but the minister wants the export of organic products to increase by 10% each year, to become in 2020 a major player in the sector.
The government provides a range of support (financial support, subsidies for organic certification ...) to encourage conversion to organic production. Last year the country had 50,000 hectares devoted to organic crops, almost 14% more than the previous year.
So far, it is mainly the markets of the United States, Japan, the European Union and the Middle East, which generated the largest volume of requests, but the ASEAN countries and China, with a dynamic and a growing number of consumers with high purchasing power growth, greatly increase their demands.
