All imported food products must now be met with certificates.
Importers of vegetables and fruit must present a certificate indicating the maximum permitted percentage of pesticide content in all shipments entering Oman. This directive, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, entered into force on the 21st of May.
"Importers must submit an approved certificate to the accredited services of the exporting countries. Unprocessed food products are rejected and can not enter the country," states the ministerial directive.
The Municipality of Muscat also asked all local farms to use labels on all vegetables and fruit sold in Oman for better traceability in the event of a problem. Random inspections are carried out in around 166,000 farms. Thousands of samples were taken for analysis and 98% were found to be within internationally accepted limits.
Oman's agriculture sector accounted for 0.9 percent of GDP in 2016, according to the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The country has set a target of reaching 3.1% by 2020.
