In South Africa the 2020/21 season is approaching and the overall stone fruit volume estimates are much better than last year at the same time. The volumes produced will increase and exports should increase by 5 to 22% depending on the category.

Hortgro has released data which indicates an increase in volumes compared to the previous season. Apricot exports should total 435,600 boxes (4.75 kg) or + 23% compared to the previous year. Exports of nectarines should reach 5.6 million boxes (2.5 kg) or + 11% compared to the previous year, exports of peaches 2.1 million boxes (2.5 kg) or + 5% compared to the previous year. Plum exports 10.8 million boxes (5.25 kg) or + 22% compared to the previous year.

South African stone fruit growers, packers and exporters are confident. The supply chain has also returned to a more normal operational status, with great attention being paid to improving efficiency in all major ports from which fruit is shipped. The industry is convinced that the logistical challenges faced over the past year due to COVID-19 are a thing of the past and remain optimistic for this coming season.
