Pears have revealed all their secrets to the international consortium of scientists from seven universities or institutes.
The announcement of the first sequencing of pear has come a few days after that of the tomato.
An international consortium, composed of 7 universities and institutes, has completed the first genome sequencing. Launched in 2010 the project brought together researchers from Nanjing Agricultural University, BGI, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences,
University of Illinois, University of Georgia, University of Hawaii and Tohoku University.
Pears are very diverse, with thousands of varieties, and divided into two major groups European and Asian. Sequencing provides a solid foundation to improve the taste, colour, disease resistance and insect performance.
