The export of yams will boost the country's agricultural incomes that wants to invest in the sector to increase production.
Nigeria is one of the biggest producers of yam (37 million tons) with a low export volume but could increase rapidly with the new Chinese demand.
The Ministry of Agriculture of Nigeria announced that China wants to import yam. To meet it, massive investments are planned to increase production. Shipments could begin within the next 5 months.
Cultivated in tropical regions, yam is a tuber whose chemical composition is close to that of potatoes with about 25% starch and a little more protein (7%). It is consumed as a root vegetable and some of its varieties are used in industry.
