According to a report submitted to the National Assembly, the world citrus market generates 14.8 billion USD but Pakistan's contribution is only 180 million USD. This figure could however be increased by various measures.
During a meeting with parliamentarians, APFVEA (All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association) indicated that Pakistan produces 2.1 million tonnes of kinnows but that these fruits are only exported to 10 countries.
Despite a number of varieties around the world, Pakistan has only one variety of kinnow. Citrus research is essential to improve the variety but also to introduce new varieties.
Investments in technology are needed to increase the quality of exports. Currently, Russia is the largest market for Pakistani kinnows, but Iran is the 2nd largest export market for kinnows. If the Iranian market opens up to kinnows, Pakistani exports could increase by 40%.
Without such measures in place, it will be difficult for Pakistan to compete with other countries. In particular India, which has started producing kinnows for almost 4 years and which will be a competitor on the international market.
